As for chapter books, I think the best one to introduce them to is the "Magic Treehouse" series. Yo-Yo started to read them when he was in Kindergarten. It's simple, well written, fun, fantasy type but full of non-fiction facts as well (history, geography, culture, ...). The three classic books by E.B. White are very good, especially "Charlotte's Web" (Yo-Yo started to read it in Kinder too, then I took him to see the movie at the end of his Kinder year). If they like detective stories, you might want to try the "A to Z Mysteries" series. Roald Dahl's books are pretty good (most famous "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", "James and the Giant Peach"). Other series that Yo-Yo likes: "Chronicles of Narnia", "Boxcar Children", "Secrets of Droon", ""Horrible Harry", "Nate the Great", "Junie B Jones", "Beast Quest", "Diary of a Wimpy Kid", "TinTin's Adventures", and a lot more. I used to read what he read, but I can't catch up with him now. And of course his favorite is "Harry Potter", but they are long and not as easy as the other series. He also likes those books that all boys seem to be attracted to, but I kind of frown upon -- Pokemon, Yu-Gi-O, Transformers, Star Wars, Captain Underpants ... They may not be too bad, but I just don't like too much violence or toilet jokes. Yo-Yo reads a lot, but most of the books he picked are fictions, mostly from the above series. I hope he can read more genres, so I often check out non-fictions, biographies, art, simplified classic novels, or poems from the library. He does read them, even Shakespeare, when he runs out of his own favorites to read. But he does not think of these books when he goes to a library.
